Hi! My name is Ruby Williams, I'm 15 years old, and I'm a professional baker. I didn't always like to bake, but I'll tell you how I learned to love it! By the end of second grade, I was having a hard time reading. I didn't like school at all. I was struggling with not only school work, but with my self-esteem. So, my mom decided to homeschool me for third grade to figure out what was going on. During that time, we found out I had dyslexia.

Instead of making me sit down and read, read, and read more, my mom took me into the kitchen where we started to bake, bake, and bake some more. At first, the recipes were confusing. My mom would read the recipes and tell me what to do. As I began to really love baking, she would encourage me to read the recipes myself and figure out the math! I thought I was just spending time with my mom learning to bake, but instead, I was learning how to learn.

I realized that having dyslexia doesn't mean I'm broken, it just means I learn differently than some people.

When I turned 11, my mom saw a talent in me that I didn't see yet. She asked me if I wanted to turn baking into a business. I agreed and got to work with branding and developing my own recipes. At first I would hide behind my mom at the farmer's markets and I didn't want to talk. She encouraged me to talk to people and that's when my life changed. My self confidence started to grow because people loved my baking! Today, I'm 15 and I have a very successful business that I absolutely love! I sell my baked goods at a local store called Red Door Home Décor, at local markets, and from my website.

Having dyslexia is hard sometimes, but I've learned not to let it define who I am. Who knows, maybe I wouldn't have discovered how much I love to bake!

My dream is to open up a brick and mortar bakery or have a food truck in Snowflake, Arizona, where people can make friends, feel loved, and entertained. I love to play the guitar and sing, so, my bakery will have an open mic night with lots of great music and all the yummy treats you can eat!

Thank you for being my friend.

xoxo,

Ruby
